My name is Matthew Johnson, I currently serve proudly in the position of Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator (VOC) at the Gauntlet. I began this role in early October, something that is not traditional. However, I was able to quickly adapt to the position. In my time, I took over and completed the reorientation program. A first of its kind program that allowed for the organization and the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) to have accurate numbers on current volunteers.

I am proud to say, despite Bill C-18 and Meta banning our social media account on the platform, I was able to create a new Instagram (@tg.outreach) that we have been able to begin to grow. An account that has surpassed our sister account (@thegauntlet.sports) in followers. This has laid the foundation to connect with our readers, advertise our print editions, and create the opportunity to develop new ways to share our reporting with students. My Outreach team and I have also worked hard to develop branding guidelines that can outlast even my time in the position of VOC, to ensure there is a clear and recognizable brand to our social media.
I have also been able to develop my leadership skills, connecting with members of the editorial team, and being able to resolve any issues between an editor and a volunteer. Whether that be making sure the job of a volunteer is completed to the best of their abilities or ensuring there is respectful communications between both volunteers and editors.
In my short time, I have also worked hard to develop my skills as a writer and reporter. Working closely and writing for nearly every section at the Gauntlet. I have also developed a strong network of sources within the University that have been extremely beneficial in current and future reporting. I have also worked intimately with members of the editorial team to share tips on stories, expand lines of questioning with interview subjects, and begin to develop longer-form investigative pieces into our reporting.
I am also proud to say that I took on a larger sized role of Students’ Union election coverage, writing seven profiles on candidates, as well as working with the Visuals team to plan out promotion of our presidential debate. My Outreach team and I, also created video content with each presidential candidate to help increase awareness and turnout for the event.
I look to bring all that I have learned from my time as VOC into the role of Editor-in-Chief. The very nature of my role within the newsroom has allowed me to see personally what is required from the position. As well as, what is required from each section to be the best newsroom we can possibly be.
Now more than ever, we are presented with an opportunity to grow, to develop our reporting, and ensure when our time as a part of this fantastic organization comes to an end, we set future generations up for success.
